THE PUBLIC NATURE OF ST. ANN’S
ACADEMY BUILDING AND GROUNDS
Due to the increasing popularity of St.
Ann’s Academy as a recognised national historic site and as
a place for events, the Provincial Capital Commission (PCC) has
found it necessary to clarify how the building and property can
be used.
St. Ann’s Academy is owned by the
PCC in trust for the people of British Columbia and, as such, the
grounds are open for public use at all times. The Interpretive Centre,
which includes the Chapel, Parlours and Novitiate Garden, is open
for public viewing at regular times. The remainder of the building
is used for government offices and the tenants occupying this space
also have access to the building and grounds without restrictions.
Permission may be granted, to groups or
individuals, to use four parts of the property on a rental basis:
Academy Green (map #2),
Orchard (map #11), Auditorium
(map #10), or the Interpretive
Centre and Novitiate Garden (map
#7, 8 & 12). Rental arrangements are made through the completion
of a Contract and Invoice for Facility Rental and the payment of
the appropriate rental fee. Although you have permission to hold
your event in a specific area, you may not interfere with the Public
using this area at the same time. What the Contract does ensure
is that on the date and time specified on your contract we will
not book any other events in the same area.
As there are four separate rental areas
on the property - Academy Green, Orchard, Auditorium and the Interpretive
Centre (including the Chapel and the Novitiate Garden) - it is possible
that there may be more than one event running at the same time.
Due to the close proximity of the Academy Green and Orchard with
the Chapel and Novitiate Garden, bridal events will not be booked
into more than one of these locations at any time. Also, the Chapel
or Novitiate Garden may be rented after the Academy Green or Orchard
are booked but the Academy Green or Orchard will not be rented for
an event if the Chapel or Novitiate Garden is already booked for
an event at that time. This does not preclude an event setting up
on the Academy Green or Orchard prior to the Chapel or Novitiate
Garden rental and then holding the event after the Chapel or Novitiate
Garden events are completed.
This permission does not include exclusive
accessor use by the renter and their guests. Visitors to the
building and property will be advised of events underway; however
access to the grounds or the Interpretive Centre can not be unreasonably
denied during public opening hours. During the times which the Interpretive
Centre is open for public viewing, a renter cannot deny access by
the public to enter the Chapel during services. Most visitors will
not do this, but they do appreciate being able to view the Chapel
during the arrival of guests or during photography sessions in the
Chapel.
